May in Curtis is an exciting time of year! The warmer weather is always welcome after a long winter (the exception being the extremely mild winter we just had). After spending months sheltering from the wind and cold, there is nothing more exhilarating than sunny days to get one in the mood for getting out and about!
I recently wrote about things to do in the area and I mentioned that Curtis is home to many events. Today, I’d like to mention some of the great happenings our area has planned for the next couple of weeks that you don’t want to miss. I would love to write about all of the events happening this summer, but there are so many this blog post would go on forever! Instead, I will post again soon about what our part of the Upper Peninsula has to offer in June.
Hideaway Tiny Acres gives you the privacy and space you desire while being close enough to enjoy these fun activities and events!
May 15 – The Marshland Wildlife Drive and Temporary Visitors Center opened at Seney National Wildlife Refuge! The refuge is full of action this time of year with returning migratory birds. Learn about the world’s oldest known loons, ABJ and Fe. This is a great time of year to walk the nature trails before the summer sun heats everything up. The trees are bursting with leaves, the air is sweet, and the bugs are manageable. The refuge is hosting a photo contest that anyone is welcome to participate in by submiting photos they’ve taken on the Seney refuge or the other reserves that they manage. Photos need to be turned in by July 26.
May 22-June 19 – The Federal and Junior Duck Stamp Gallery Exhibit will be at the Erickson Center for the Arts in partnership with the Friends of Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service sponsors this annual federal art contest. This competition is the only art contest that the federal government sponsors.
May 24 & 25 – The Curtis Chamber of Commerce has its annual Memorial Weekend Yard Sales event. As you know, we prefer to repurpose rather than buy new. If you are of a similar philosophy, this might be a great time to see what treasures you can find in town.
This isn’t the only happenings in the area during Memorial Weekend:
May 25 & 26 – Enjoy a hearty lumberjack breakfast at the Tahquamenon Logging Museum right outside of Newberry! Breakfast starts at 7 AM and goes until noon. On the menu are Pancakes, Eggs, American Fries, Sausage, Bacon, Coffee, Milk, and Juice. Experience a little history as you enjoy breakfast eating like the lumberjacks did! Then mosey around the grounds and see what the museum has to offer.
After breakfast, you can head to Tahquamenon Falls State Park for a day outdoors. Starting at 10 AM a Jr. Naturalist Program begins where you can learn about Michigan’s largest mammal and the adaptations it’s made. Later, at 2 PM, you have the opportunity to join a park naturalist and have your questions answered as you walk to Michigan’s largest waterfall as a group.
May 27 – A Memorial Day Service will be held in Curtis at 9 AM at the Woodlawn Cemetery.
May 29 & 30 – Spend an evening solving a murder at the Erickson Center for the Arts while enjoying some delicious food! Featuring a script written by two Curtis locals, Dawn Buckley and Sally Herweyer, “Clueless” draws its inspiration from the Clue board game. The audience is invited to Lord Lionel’s Shaftsbury Manor for a cocktail party. Lord Lionel is hosting a murder mystery game that quickly goes awry!
