The eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a haven for power sports enthusiasts. This region, known for its rugged natural beauty and diverse terrain, offers a wide range of activities that cater to both adrenaline junkies and those looking for a leisurely outdoor adventure. From snowmobiling in the winter to ATV and UTV riding in the summer, there’s something for everyone. Here’s a detailed look at the power sports activities you can enjoy in this scenic area.

Snowmobiling

Prime Snowmobiling Destinations:

  1. Paradise, MI: Known for its heavy snowfall, Paradise offers access to over 200 miles of groomed trails. The famous Tahquamenon Falls State Park trail is a must-ride, providing stunning views of the falls and the surrounding wilderness.
  2. Newberry, MI: Dubbed the “Moose Capital of Michigan,” Newberry boasts a vast network of trails connecting to other key locations like Grand Marais and Munising. The trails here are well-maintained and cater to both novice and experienced riders.
  3. Curtis, MIYou’ll find yourself centrally located to restaurants, shops and snowmobile rentals and retailers within the network of 140 miles of groomed trails this area has to offer.  When you stay at Hideaway Tiny Cabin just outside of Curtis, you have the convenience of driving your snowmobile right up to your door and the trail starts just 1/4 mile from your door.

Popular Trails:

  • Trail #8: One of the most popular trails in the Upper Peninsula, it runs east-west across the entire peninsula, connecting various towns and offering spectacular views.
  • North Spur Trail: This trail takes you through dense forests and offers a more rugged experience.

Snowmobiling Events:

  • Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race: Held annually in January, this event is a great opportunity for snowmobilers to explore the trails while enjoying the race.
  • UP 200 and Midnight Run: These are some of the most significant sled dog races in the region, attracting visitors and snowmobilers alike.

ATV and UTV Riding

Top ATV/UTV Locations:

  3. Curtis Areafeatures over 60 miles of scenic and mixed terrain trails making your ATV adventures memorable.

Notable Trails:

  • Two Hearted Trail: One of my favorite trails, it’s a 34-mile loop trail that takes you through forests, over rivers, and offers a mix of challenging and moderate sections.
  • Silver Creek Trail: Located near Munising, this trail system provides riders with a variety of loops and connects to other major trail systems in the area.
