One of my most favorite months of the year is August. It’s a time where the bugs have calmed down, crops are ripening, and there’s so much to do before September! August is a vibrant month in Curtis, Michigan, and the surrounding Eastern Upper Peninsula, packed with festivals, concerts, and unique local traditions. Whether you are a resident or a visitor, there are plenty of events to enjoy the final days of summer. With that being said, many of these events have a free admission. Here are some highlights to add to your calendar.

7th Annual 906 Festival

Date: August 3

Location: Erickson Center for the Arts, Curtis

Description: The 906 Festival is a celebration of Upper Peninsula culture featuring live music, arts and crafts vendors, food stalls, and a beer and wine tent with locally crafted brews. The festival also offers family-friendly activities and entertainment throughout the day. Admission is free.

Why Attend? It’s a perfect opportunity to experience local art, music, and food
in a lively community setting.

Music in the Park Series

Dates: Various dates in August

  • Three Wheel Drive: August 7
  • The Whiskey Charmers: August 14
  • Nathan Walton and the Remedy: August 21

Location: Erickson Center for the Arts, Curtis

Description: This free concert series showcases a variety of musical acts in the picturesque setting of the Erickson Center Park. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music under the summer sky. Admission is free.

Why Attend? These concerts offer a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy diverse musical talents with friends and family

Curtis Sidewalk Sales Day

Date: August 7

Location: Downtown Curtis

Description: Local businesses in Curtis hold sidewalk sales, offering special deals and promotions. It’s a great day to shop locally and discover unique items from the area.

Why Attend? It’s a fun way to support local businesses and find great bargains while enjoying the small-town charm of Curtis. No admission fee.

Curtis Bass Clash

Date: August 17

Location: South Manistique Lake, Curtis

Description: This fishing competition attracts anglers of all ages and skill levels. Participants compete to catch the biggest bass in South Manistique Lake.

Why Attend? Whether you’re an avid fisherman or a curious spectator, the Bass Clash offers an exciting day on the lake with the chance to win prizes. There is
an entrance fee to enter the competition.

Wild Blueberry Festival

Dates: August 16-18

Location: Paradise, Michigan

Description: A short drive from Curtis, the Wild Blueberry Festival celebrates the region’s blueberry harvest with arts and crafts, live music, and delicious blueberry-themed foods. The festival is held at the Whitefish Township Community Center grounds.

Why Attend? This festival is a must for blueberry lovers and offers a fun, family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of activities for all ages. Free admission.

Les Cheneaux Antique Wooden Boat Show & Festival of Arts

Date: August 10

Location: Hessel, Michigan

Description: This event showcases beautifully restored antique wooden boats and includes an art festival featuring local artists. The boats are displayed both
on land and in the water.

Why Attend? It’s a unique opportunity to admire vintage boats and purchase original artwork while enjoying the scenic beauty of Hessel. There is a $10 per
person entrance fee.
