It’s not too late to plan a last minute getaway in August. This is an update to a blog post I wrote a few months ago. August has some of the best weather of the summer. No bugs, cooler nights and sunny days are abundant in August. Curtis, Michigan, and its surrounding areas offer a variety of events to celebrate the end of summer and the welcoming of autumn. It’s also a perfect time to experience the unique charm of the Upper Peninsula. Here’s a detailed look at some of the must-attend events in and around Curtis this August through the 1st week of September.
1. Curtis Labor Day Weekend Three Bridge Walk
Date: Monday September 3rd
Location: Downtown Curtis
Curtis Three Bridge Walk will take place on Labor Day from 8:00 AM until Noon. Check in will be at the Tally Ho Underground Bar & Grill where they will also be serving breakfast. There will be t-shirts available for purchase at the check in station. There will also be coolers with water and optional donation stations at each bridge. Proceeds will go back into the community for future events.
2. Tahquamenon Wilderness Canoe Race
Date: September 9
Location: Tahquamenon River, Paradise, MI
A short drive from Curtis, the Tahquamenon Wilderness Canoe Race is a thrilling event for both participants and spectators. This race takes paddlers through the scenic and challenging waters of the Tahquamenon River. Various categories cater to different skill levels, from novice to expert. Watching the race offers a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula in early fall.
Date: Saturday and Sunday, August 24th and 25th
Location: Newberry, MI
Want to know what a lumberjack has for breakfast? You can experience an authentic lumberjack breakfast for yourself for two more days in August PLUS check out the Tahquamenon Logging Museum. Hours for the breakfast are from 7:00 AM to 12 Noon and breakfast includes Pancakes, Eggs, American Fries, Sausage, Bacon, Coffee, Milk, and Juice.
4. Erickson Center for the Arts And Pine Performance Center
Date: Every Wednesday through August
Location: Erickson Center for the Arts, Curtis, MI
I’ve written about this before and if you still haven’t checked out these venues you need to get down there and experience one or more of the events. One of my guests at the Hideaway Tiny Cabin attended The True North Quartet Chamber Music Concert last Saturday and LOVED it. Many of the events are no charge like the Music In The Park series on Wednesday evenings through August. After August they’re done until next year so check it out if you can. Here’s the line up: The Whiskey Charmers 8-14, Nathan Walton and the Remedy 8-21, and The Knockabouts 8-28
Date: Friday – Sunday, August 16-18
Location: Paradise, MI
Another event I wrote about in my previous blog post but this is a must attend. Paradise is THE Blueberry Capital Of The World (I think) There’s so much going on here from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day and something for the whole family. An arts and crafts fair, blueberry bake sale, souvenir tent, entertainment, blueberry brunch, and more. Check out their website for all the information including history of the event.
